HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF JONAH - WHAT IDOLS DID THE NINEVITES WORSHIP?

WHAT IDOLS DID THE NINEVITES WORSHIP?

Nineveh was a center of worship for Ishtar, a goddess of war and sexuality. This makes sense when one considers the fact that the Assyrians were fierce and vicious warriors. They worshipped the fish god Dagon and his female counterpart, Nanshe. It was no mistake that God had a giant fish spit Jonah out on the shore. That part of his experience probably helped to get the attention of people who worshipped a god that was supposed to be part man and part fish!
