Prophecies & Fulfillments Concerning Christ’s Death, Burial, and Resurrection - Part 4

Prophecies & Fulfillments
Concerning Christ’s
Death, Burial, and Resurrection

LABELED AS TRANSGRESSOR

Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 27:3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

Luke 23:32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

DEATH MADE ATONEMENT FOR SIN

Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:5-7, 12 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. . . Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Fulfillment:

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Acts 8:30-35 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

BURIED WITH RICH MEN

Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 27:57-60 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

RESURRECTION FROM DEATH

Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:9-10 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

Psalm 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 28:1-20 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.  And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Acts 2:23-36 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Until I make thy foes thy footstool. Therefore, let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and

Acts 13:33-37 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.  And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

1 Corinthians 15:4-6 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

ASCENSION

Prophecy:

Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Psalm 68:18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the Lord God might dwell among them.

Psalm 110:1 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Fulfillment:

Luke 24:51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

Acts 1:9-11 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Acts 7:55 But he (Stephen), being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Prophecies & Fulfillments
Concerning Christ’s
Death, Burial, and Resurrection

MOCKING THE MESSIAH

Prophecy:

Psalm 22:7-8 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 26:67-68 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?

Matthew 27:31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

Matthew 27:39-44  And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

MESSIAH WOULD BE BEATEN BEFORE KILLED

Prophecy:

Isaiah 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 26:67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,

Matthew 27:26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 27:35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

John 19:18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

John 19:37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

John 20:20, 24-28 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. . . But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

SOLDIERS GAMBLED FOR HIS CLOTHING

Psalm 22:18 They part my garments among them and cast lots upon my vesture.

BE THIRSTY ON THE CROSS

Prophecy:

Psalm 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

Fulfillment:

John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

OFFERED VINEGAR FOR HIS THIRST

Prophecy:

Psalm 69:21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Fulfillment:

John 19:29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

NO BONES BROKEN

Prophecy:

Exodus 12:46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof. (This was concerning the Passover lamb. Jesus was the final and perfect Passover Lamb.)

Psalm 34:20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

Fulfillment:

John 19:33-36 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

Prophecies & Fulfillments Concerning Christ’s Death, Burial, and Resurrection

Prophecies & Fulfillments
Concerning Christ’s
Death, Burial, and Resurrection

BETRAYED BY A FRIEND

Prophecy:

Psalm 41:9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

Psalm 55:12-14 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 26:21-25 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.  The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

Matthew 26:47-50 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him.

John 13:18-21 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

Acts 1:16-18 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER PAID TO BETRAYER

Prophesy:

Zechariah 13:7 - And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.

Prophecy:

Matthew 26:15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

THE BETRAYAL PRICE THROWN BACK INTO THE TEMPLE

Prophecy:

Zechariah 11:13 And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was priced at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 27:3-7 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.

FORSAKEN BY DISCIPLES

Prophecy:

Zechariah 13:7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 26:31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

Matthew 26:56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

MESSIAH WOULD BE STRUCK ON CHEEK

Micah 5:1 Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.

Fulfilment:

Matthew 27:30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

THEY WOULD SPIT ON MESSIAH

Matthew 27:30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

Prophecies & Fulfillments Concerning Christ’s Death, Burial, and Resurrection Part 1

For the next four Fridays, starting tonight, we will be posting Old Testament prophecies and the corresponding New Testament scripture describing their fulfillment.

Prophecies & Fulfillments
Concerning Christ’s
Death, Burial, and Resurrection
Part 1

Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
on a Donkey

Prophecy:

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 21:1-11 King James Version (KJV)
21 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strew them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

Entered the Temple with Authority

Prophecy:

Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

Fulfillment:
John 2:13-22 And the Jews' Passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

REJECTED BY JEWISH RELIGIOUS LEADERS

Prophecy:

Psalm 118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

Fulfillment:

Matthew 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

John 7:48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?

PLOTS BY JEWS AND GENTILES TOGETHER

Psalm 2:1-2 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed. . .

Fulfillment:

Acts 4:27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together. . .

GEMS FROM THE GOSPELS JOHN 20 & 21 #52days

GEMS FROM THE GOSPELS
JOHN 20 & 21

John 20 – Early on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and found the stone rolled away from the entrance. She ran to tell Peter and John that Jesus had been moved, and she did not know where. John outran Peter to the tomb and saw the empty burial cloths but did not go in. Peter caught up and barged in. He also saw the burial cloths and the face cloth folded separate from the rest of them. John saw this and believed Jesus had raised from the dead. Prior to this they did not realize that Scripture taught the Messiah must rise from the dead (Isaiah 53:9-12, Psalm 16:10). After the two disciples went home, Mary Magdalene stood outside the tomb crying. She saw two angels sitting in the tomb and told them she cried because the Lord had been moved. She turned and saw a man she thought to be the gardener and asked where he had put the body. Jesus said her name, and she cried out, “Rabbani!” Jesus told her not to cling to Him because He had not yet gone to the Father. He told her to tell His disciples He was going to his Father and theirs. She went and reported what Jesus said to the disciples. MARY SHARED HER CONFIDENCE.  That evening the disciples gather in a room with the doors locked for fear of the Jews. Jesus appeared and said, “Peace be with you!” He showed them His hands and side and repeated, “Peace be with you.” The disciples were filled with joy to see Him. Jesus said He was sending them out as God had sent Him out, and breathing on them said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Thomas had not been there when Jesus appeared. The disciples SHARED THEIR CONFIDENCE with Thomas, but he said that unless he saw the nail scars and put his finger into Jesus’s side, he would not believe that Jesus was alive. A week later, the disciples gathered again, and Thomas was with them. Jesus appeared and invited Thomas to check out His wounds and believe. Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus told Thomas he believed because he had seen, but those who believe without seeing are truly blessed. Jesus performed many miracles in their presence, but John said he did not record all of them. He wrote, “But these which have been recorded are here so that you may trust that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by this trust you may have life because of who He is. John SHARED HIS CONFIDENCE by preaching and writing his account of the Gospel. SHARE YOUR CONFIDENCE in our risen Lord as you walk through your daily life.

John 21 – Thomas, Nathanael, James, John, and two other disciples went fishing with Peter, a return to a familiar occupation. They didn’t catch anything all night. A man on the shore told them to cast their net on the starboard side of the boat. When they did so, the net was so full of fish they couldn’t haul it aboard. John said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” Peter threw on his coat and dove into the water. The others followed in the boat dragging the net full of fish. Jesus had a fire burning and fish already cooking and some bread. Simon Peter dragged the net ashore, and even though it contained 153 fish, it had not torn. Jesus invited His disciples to join Him for breakfast. They all recognized Him as the Lord. This was the third time He had appeared to the disciples after being raised from the dead. Jesus took Peter aside and asked him if he loved Him, the first two times using “agapaŏ” which is a moral choice to love without condition. Peter replied each time that he loved Jesus as a friend (philĕō). The third time Jesus changed to philĕō which pained Peter that the Lord had changed it to his level. Peter assured Jesus of his friendly love.

25 – agapaŏ – to love (in a social or moral sense) (be-) love (-ed) related to 26 – agape – affection or benevolence – a love-feast – charity, dear, love.

5368 – philĕō – to be a friend to (fond of), have affection for (denoting personal attachment, as a matter of sentiment or feeling: while 25 is wider embracing espec. The judgment and the deliberate assent of the will as a matter of principle, duty and propriety; the two thus stand related; the former (25) being chiefly of the heart and the latter of the head; spec. to kiss (as a mark of tenderness) – kiss, love.

Each time Peter responded to the Lord, Jesus told him to feed or shepherd His sheep, meaning those who trusted in Christ for salvation. Then Jesus described a scenario of Peter in his older years which indicated he would be crucified. After explaining that the cost would be martyrdom for Peter, Jesus simply said, “Follow me.” Peter saw John nearby and asked, “What about him?” Jesus said if He wanted John to live until he returned, it was not any of Peter’s business. The rumor spread that John would not die, but that was not what Jesus said. John ended his account of the Gospel of Jesus Christ by saying that if he had written everything Jesus had done, the whole would could not contain the books. Peter is not the only one to whom Jesus says, “FEED MY SHEEP.” Those of us who have walked with Jesus longer, have studied the word more intently, have a responsibility to teach others. We are all to go along making disciples and teaching them what Jesus did and said.

Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV) Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

GEMS FROM THE GOSPELS JOHN 18 & 19 #52days

GEMS FROM THE GOSPELS

JOHN 18 & 19

John 18 & 19 – Jesus and his disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Judas Iscariot was familiar with this frequent meeting place and took a detachment of Roman soldiers as well as some Temple guards provided by the High Priest and the Pharisees armed with weaponry to accost the “criminal.” Jesus asked who they wanted even though He already knew. When they said they were looking for Jesus of Nazareth, He said, “I AM.” At that moment the soldiers backed up and fell to the ground. They asked again and He replied the same way and told them to let the disciples go since it was Him they wanted. Simon Peter cut off the ear of the High Priest’s servant, and Jesus told him to put the sword away because this was the cup the Father wanted Him to drink. We know from the other Gospels that Jesus had, in His humanity, wrestled in prayer to submit to drinking the cup of bearing the sins of the world. Satan was actually defeated during that prayer. It was already FINISHED when Jesus said, “Not my will, but Thine be done.” They arrested Jesus and took Him tied up to Annas, the former High Priest and father-in-law of the current High Priest, Caiaphas. Peter and another disciple (John) followed. John was known to the High Priest and secured entrance to the courtyard for Peter. The woman at the gate was the first to whom Peter denied knowing Jesus. Annas questions Jesus who replied that He had taught openly, and Annas could ask those who heard him. A guard slapped Him for speaking to the High Priest in this way. Jesus told him if He had said something wrong, state it. If not, why did he hit Him? Annas sent Jesus to Caiaphas. Simon Peter denied knowing Jesus two more times. Immediately, a rooster crowed fulfilling what Jesus said about Peter denying Him three times before dawn. The High Priest and Pharisees led Jesus to the governor’s headquarters in the early morning, but they did not enter lest they be ritually unclean and not able to observe Passover by entering the domain of a Gentile. Pilate came out and asked the charge against Jesus. He thought they could try Him under Jewish laws, but under Roman rule they could not order the execution of anyone. Pilate took Jesus inside and asked, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus wanted to know if he was asking for himself or others had said that. Pilate told Jesus that His own people had handed Him over to him and asked what He had done. Jesus replied that His kingship was not derived from this world order. Pilate said, “Then you are king.” Jesus said, “You say I am a king. I bear witness to the truth. Those who belong to the truth listen to me.” Pilate asked rhetorically, “What is truth?” Then he went out and told the Pharisees he didn’t find a case against Jesus. He offered to free Jesus in honor of Passover, but they demanded that he release Barabbas the revolutionary instead. Pilate had Jesus flogged. The soldiers pushed a crown of thorns deep into His head, place a purple robe on Him, and mocked and abused Him. Pilate made one more attempt to free Jesus. He stood the now pitiful looking Jesus in front of the crowd, but they shouted, “Crucify Him!” The Pharisees said that according to their law, He must die because He claimed to be the Son of God. When Pilate present Jesus as their king, they shouted, “We have no king but Caesar!” Pilate gave up and sent Jesus to be crucified. Jesus was made to carry His cross to Golgotha. Other Gospels tell us Simon of Cyrene was forced to complete the task because Jesus was too weak. Jesus was nailed to the cross and placed between two thieves. Pilate had a sign placed above His head that read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews,” in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. The Pharisees protested it should read that He claimed to be king, but Pilate would not change it. The soldiers divided His clothes and gambled for His robe (Psalm 22:18). Jesus’s mother and two other women stood near the cross. Mary was standing next to the Apostle John. Jesus said to her, “Woman, this is your son,” and to John, “This is your mother.” John took Mary into his home from then on. It was the day before the Sabbath, Preparation Day, and the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath. Therefore, Pilate ordered the soldiers to break their legs to hasten death. They did not break Jesus’s legs because He was already dead, but a soldier stabbed Him in the side with a spear. Blood and water flowed out proving He was truly dead. The fact that His legs were not broken was in keeping with Exodus 12:46 since He was the Lamb of God, and they were not to break the legs of the Passover lambs. Psalm 34:20 prophesied that the Messiah would not suffer broken bones. Being pierced with the spear was a fulfillment of Zechariah 12:10. Joseph of Arimathea, a covert disciple of Jesus, asked Pilate for His body. Nicodemus, another secret follower, brought seventy pounds of spices, myrrh, and aloes to anoint Him for burial. They wrapped His body and laid it in a new tomb in the nearby garden. This act would have “outed” them as disciples.

IT IS FINISHED:
·      Jesus’s time as a man was FINISHED
·      His mission on earth was FINISHED
·      The payment for our sin was FINISHED
·      Satan’s hold on believers was FINISHED
·      For believers, separation from God was FINISHED
·      For those who trust Jesus, death was defeated and FINISHED
·      ALL JESUS SET OUT TO DO ON HIS FIRST VISIT TO EARTH WAS COMPLETELY FINISHED

GEMS FROM THE GOSPEL

John 16 & 17

John 16 & 17 – Jesus told the disciples about severe persecution in advance so they would not be caught off guard and would have confirmation of His deity. He promised the Holy Spirit, the comforting Counselor, would come after He returned to the Father. The Holy Spirit would teach them the truth about sin, righteousness, and judgment. HE WILL GUIDE you to understanding the word of God. The Spirit of Truth would guide them into all the truth as He will speak only what He hears. He would announce events of the future to the Apostles and glorify Jesus. Jesus here validated that the New Testament would be the result of the Holy Spirit enlightening the Apostles to teach. HE WILL GUIDE into complete truth. The disciples did not understand when Jesus said that in a little while they would see Him no more and then a little while later they would see Him. They did not ask about it, but Jesus explained that they would sob and mourn, but their grief would turn to joy. He promised they He would see them again, and their hearts would be filled with joy that no one could take away. They would ask the Father in His name and receive so that their joy would be complete. HE WILL GUIDE to complete joy. Jesus then stated clearly that He was returning to the Father who had sent Him. The disciples then stated that people don’t even need to put their questions into words which led them to trust that He truly came from God. Jesus told them even though they believed, they would scatter and leave Him alone; but the Father would be with Him. Jesus explained that they would always have trials in this world, but they could take heart because He has overcome the world. HE WILL GUIDE us to overcome the world. John chapter 17 is the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus, our High Priest (Hebrews 2:17, 4:14-15). Jesus has authority to give eternal life to those God has given Him. Eternal life is not just living forever after death on this earth—it is to enjoy an intimate knowledge of God. HE WILL GUIDE those who trust into eternal life. Jesus prayed to return to the glory He had with God the Father before they created our world. Jesus made God’s word known to His people, and His disciples had truly come to trust in Jesus as Messiah. Jesus prayed for believers. He asked the Father to guard His disciples after He returned to Heaven. He asked that His disciples be united—be one—just as He and the Father were One. Judas Iscariot was the only one of the Twelve who was not guarded, protected, by Jesus because his betrayal of Jesus  was prophesy fulfilled. The world hated the disciples because of their trust in Jesus. Jesus prayed the Father would not take them out of this world but would protect them from Satan. He prayed, “Set them apart for holiness by means of the truth—Your word is truth.” HE WILL GUIDE you into holiness through the word of God. Jesus prayed for us, believers who would come to faith because of the Apostles’ teaching. Jesus prayed that we will be one and united with Him and the Father so that the world will realize God sent Him. HE WILL GUIDE believers into unity with God and each other. Jesus told the Father He wants believers to be with Him and see His glory, the glory He had from before the creation of the world. HE WILL GUIDE those who trust in Jesus to glory.

GEMS FROM THE GOSPEL JOHN 12-15 #52days

GEMS FROM THE GOSPEL

JOHN 12-15

John 12 & 13 – Six days before Passover, Jesus had dinner at the home of Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. Martha served the mean. Mary poured perfumed oil on Jesus’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Judas Iscariot said it could have been sold for a year’s wages and given to the poor. He wasn’t concerned for the poor but wanted to line his own pocket as he stole from the common purse. Jesus said Mary had kept this for the day of His burial, so leave her alone. Some Judeans came to the dinner to gawk at Lazarus since Jesus had raised him from the dead. The religious leaders decided they should kill Lazarus because people were trusting Jesus because of his testimony. The next day as Jesus entered Jerusalem, people waved Palm branches and shouted, “Deliver us! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,” fulfilling Psalm 118:26. Jesus rode on a donkey colt in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9. After Jesus ascended, the disciples remembered the prophecies and put it all together.  Some Greek speaking Jews wanted to see Jesus and approached Philip who told Andrew. The two of them took the request to Jesus. Jesus sad that it was time for the Son of Man to be glorified and that a grain of wheat must die to produce the harvest. The Complete Jewish Study Bible noted that a wave offering of wheat sheaves was given to the Lord of the Harvest. Jesus had come to earth to harvest souls! Jesus said one must lose his life in order to save it, and the Father will honor anyone who serves Jesus. TAKE A STAND even if it costs your life. Jesus said He came for the very reason to die for sinners. He said, “Father, glorify your name!” A voice from heaven replied, “I have glorified it before, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd thought the voice was thunder or maybe an angel. Jesus explained that the voice for their sake, not His. He said it was time for the ruler of this world (i.e. Satan) to be judged. Then He said, “When I am lifted up, I will draw everyone to myself.” He was indicating His death on the cross. Jesus planned to TAKE A STAND. The people questioned how the Messiah could die if He remains forever. Jesus urged them to “trust in the Light to become people of light.” Despite miracles, most of them still did not trust. Those leaders who did trust did so covertly to avoid being banned from the synagogue. They loved the praise of the people more than praise from God. The did not TAKE A STAND. Jesus taught that those who put their trust in him were also trusting the One who sent Him. He said He did not come to judge but to save, but the words He had spoken would judge those who reject Him. It was now just before Passover, and Jesus knew it was time for Him to go back to the Father. The Enemy had put it in the heart of Judas Iscariot to betray Him. Even though Jesus had all power and authority from God, He clothed Himself as a servant and washed the disciples’ feet. Peter balked at this idea, but Jesus explained that if He did not wash His feet, Peter could have no part of Him. Then Peter wanted an entire bath, but Jesus assured him that he was clean and need only wash his feet. However, Jesus said, “Not all of you are clean,” meaning Judas Iscariot. Jesus told the disciples that He was setting an example for them of servant leadership. As they began to eat the Passover meal, Jesus said, “The one eating my bread has turned against me,” a fulfillment of Psalm 41:9. Peter prompted John to ask Jesus who would betray Him. He said, “The one I give the bread to after dipping it in the dish.” He dipped bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot, and the devil immediately entered Judas. Jesus told him to do it quickly. The clueless disciples thought Jesus might be sending Judas to buy items for the festival or give some money to the poor. Judas went out into the night. Jesus told the remaining Eleven that He would only be with them a little while longer, and they could not go where He was going yet. He gave them a new commandment to love each other as He had loved them so that everyone would know they were His disciples. Peter asked where He was going, and Jesus told him he would have to come later. Peter asserted that he would lay down his life for Jesus, but Jesus prophesied, “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” Even though in the verses to come, we will see not only Peter but all the apostles fleeing in fear, eventually they bravely stood for Jesus despite persecution or even martyrdom. It wasn’t until Jesus’s mission was complete and the Holy Spirit indwelled them that they could do what they had sincerely desired to do at that last supper.  Those of us who are believers today have the benefit of the Holy Spirit inside us empowering us to TAKE A STAND for Jesus.

John 14 & 15 – Jesus said those who trust in God should trust in Him also. Jesus went before us to prepare a place for us in His Father’s house, and He will return to take us there. Thomas asked, “We don’t even know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus proclaimed, “I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life—no one come to the Father except through me.” HE IS THE WAY to the Father. He said if they knew Him, they knew the Father. Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father.” Jesus explained that those who had seen Him had seen the Father because they are united, the Father was doing His works through Jesus. He told them that those who trust in Him would do even greater works than He. He instructed them that if you love Jesus, you will keep His commands. He then explained that the Father would send the Holy Spirit as their Counselor to be with them forever. Then He stated, “Because I live, you too will live.” The Holy Spirit would remind them of everything Jesus had taught them. Jesus promised to leave them with peace (shalom – wholeness, nothing missing, nothing broken). HE IS THE WAY to perfect peace. Jesus told them these things in advance to help them trust more deeply when it all happened. He ended with, “The Ruler of this world has no claim on me. This is happening so the world will know I love and obey My Father.” Then He said, “Let’s go.” Jesus gave an illustration of Himself as the true Vine, His followers as branches in the vine, and God the Father as the gardener or vine dresser. The gardener cuts off branches that do not bear fruit but prunes the good branches to bear more fruit. We are pruned by the words of Jesus, and we cannot bear fruit apart from Him. Those who do not trust in Jesus, like barren branches, are thrown into the fire. If you remain in Jesus and His words remain in you, you may ask in His name, and it will be answered. Glorify God and prove you are His disciple by bearing much fruit. Stay in His love and keep His commandments in order to have complete joy. HE IS THE WAY to complete joy. Jesus commanded us to keep on loving each other just as He has loved us. Then He stated, “No greater love has a man that this, that a man lays down his life for his friends.” HE IS THE WAY to true love. He said we are His friends if we do what He has commanded. Jesus told the disciples, “You did not choose me. I chose you and commissioned you to bear fruit that lasts.” Once again, He reiterated that they were to keep on loving each other. He reminded them that a servant is not greater than the master. If they hated Him, they would hate His followers. The hatred for Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of Psalm 35:19 and 69:4. The Holy Spirit testifies on Jesus’s behalf as do the disciples who were with Him from the beginning. Many people have confirmed that HE IS THE WAY.
